Chinese Dumpling "Shumai" recipe

 Chinese Shumai Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound ground pork

  • 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 2 tablespoons minced bamboo shoots

  • 2 tablespoons minced water chestnuts

  • 2 green onions, finely chopped

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper

  • 24-round shumai wrappers (you can find them in Asian grocery stores)

  • 24 small square pieces of parchment paper, for lining the steamer

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, shrimp, minced bamboo shoots, minced water chestnuts, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, sugar, salt, and white pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

  2. To assemble the shumai, hold a shumai wrapper in your hand and place about 1 tablespoon of the filling in the centre. Gather the edges of the wrapper, leaving the top open, and lightly pleat the sides, allowing the filling to show on top. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

  3. Line a steamer basket with the parchment paper squares to prevent the shumai from sticking. Arrange the shumai on the parchment paper, leaving space between each piece.

  4. Bring water to a boil in a steamer or a large pot. Place the steamer basket with the shumai on top, making sure the water doesn't touch the shumai. Steam over medium heat for about 12-15 minutes, or until the filling is cooked through.

  5. Serve the shumai hot, garnished with additional chopped green onions if desired. They can be enjoyed on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce, chilli oil, or a combination of soy sauce and vinegar.

This Chinese shumai is a delicious and popular dim sum dish that you can easily make at home. Enjoy these flavorful and delicate dumplings as an appetizer or part of a meal.
